If you’re in college, especially studying something like engineering or tech, you’ve probably heard someone say:
“Don’t forget your AICTE points before the final semester.”
And maybe you just nodded along, thinking: wait… what even are those?
The short answer: VTU B.E./B.Tech. students need 100 AICTE activity points (75 if you joined by lateral entry, 50 if you transferred in at the 5th semester). Every 20 points takes 80 to 90 hours of community work, with at most 20 points under any one activity head, and everything must be done before your 8th-semester exams. Keep proof of every activity, and find activities to join on Sceen.

Why Activity Points Actually Matter
If you’re studying at a technical college in India, the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) expects you to do more.
Not just academically. But practically. In the real world.
To support that goal, AICTE introduced the Activity Points System, a way to encourage students to move beyond textbooks, engage with real world challenges, and develop practical skills that actually matter after graduation.
NO POINTS = NO DEGREE
The goal is to produce engineers with a heart and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Placement recruiters are also increasingly looking for social impact to evaluate skills: professionals who understand rural development and community service.
Additionally, you’ll need proper proof. That means certificates, photos, and a short report about what you did.
How many points are required for VTU engineering students?
The points you need depend on when you joined your B.E./B.Tech. programme.
| How you joined | Points needed | Roughly how much work | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular, from the 1st semester (4 years) | 100 points | 400–450 hours | Start early. Spread it across semesters. |
| Lateral entry, or from another university, in the 3rd semester (3 years) | 75 points | 300–338 hours | Do a little every semester. Avoid the rush. |
| Transferred in at the 5th semester (2 years) | 50 points | 200–225 hours | Focus on high-quality and legitimate proof. |

Full List of AICTE Activity Categories and Point Values
You can earn a maximum of 20 points under a single activity head, so you need at least 5 different heads to reach 100.
20 points takes 80 to 90 hours of work. The hours don’t have to come from one activity, and the time you spend preparing counts.
VTU’s 15 activity heads:
- Creating local job opportunities
- Improving education quality in villages
- An actionable plan for doubling village income
- Sustainable water management
- Improving villagers’ health
- Low-cost sanitation
- Promoting local tourism
- Technology that improves quality of life
- Energy conservation
- Skilling village youth and providing employment
- Reducing construction cost
- Sustainable growth of villages
- Information clubs for women
- Efficient garbage disposal
- Contributing to a Government of India initiative, such as Digital India, Skill India or the Swachh Bharat Internship
Any other topic that benefits society can also count, if your college’s AICTE activity points coordinator agrees. Your coordinator decides what counts.
Some examples of activities you can conduct and take part in:
- Helping local schools: improving results or enrollment.
- Rural business proposals: creating plans to enhance village income.
- Sustainable water management: rainwater harvesting or lake conservation.
- Tourism promotion: promoting local historical sites like the Bangalore Fort.
- Appropriate technology: helping rural areas adopt better tools and tech.
- Energy conservation: implementing solutions to reduce consumption.
- Skill development: training rural youth in employability skills.
- Digital literacy: promoting UPI and digital payments in local communities.

What to do during and after the activity?
Ensure you take geo-tagged photos of you actually doing the work with your student ID card worn.
Request a certificate from the organizer that validates your work, immediately.
Just make sure the activity provides a certificate, clearly mentions your role, and fits under the AICTE list.
After every activity:
- Save photos (with location if possible).
- Get a certificate or letter.
- Write a short note about what you did and learned.
- Ask your teacher or department head to sign it.
- Keep everything safe so it’s ready for your final report.
Deadlines And How Points Appear On The VTU Grade Card
All your activities must be done before your 8th-semester exams begin.
VTU tracks points through its AICTE Activity Point Tracking System (APTS) app, which has been running across the university since January 2026. Certificates are generated at the end of every semester, and up to 20 preparation hours per activity can count, if your college coordinator verifies them (VTU circular 2194, 3 August 2026).
Points appear on your 8th-semester grade card. They are not credits and don’t affect your SGPA or CGPA, but they are mandatory:
- If you haven’t earned them by the 8th-semester exams, your 8th-semester grade card is issued only after you do.
- Your degree is awarded only after that grade card is released.
What problems do students usually face?
- No one tells them early: some students only find out in their final semester.
- Hard to know what’s valid: not every activity counts, and not all certificates are accepted.
- Missing proof: you might do the work but forget to get it verified or signed.
- Money and access: some workshops cost money. Some need good internet. Not everyone has both.
- Time crunch: exams, college events, assignments… it adds up.
- Last-minute panic: students who wait till the end often fake reports, and that backfires.
Reminder: you keep a file of evidence for every activity, and your college’s evaluator verifies and certifies it. Fake certificates or reports put your degree at risk.
Avoid the last-minute rush. Spread your activities across semesters: for a 4-year degree, 100 points before the 8th-semester exams works out to about 15 points (around 60 to 70 hours) a semester.
Tip: Try to collect participation proof and short write-ups right after every activity.
How can Sceen help in AICTE activities program?
Sceen can help you find activities regularly without having to depend on college clubs and faculty.
You can use the ‘Note’ section in a Sceen that you have joined to track your experience and hours, and share feedback with an activity host.
An e-certificate is then generated for each activity, showing your role, the date, your hours and the host organisation, ready for your report. Colleges have accepted Sceen certificates for AICTE activity points, but your coordinator decides what counts for you.

FAQ
Can I earn all 100 points through a single activity?
No. Each activity head has a cap of 20 points, so you need activities under at least 5 different heads to reach 100.
Does my internship count for AICTE Activity Points?
It depends on the internship. VTU lists the Swachh Bharat Internship as an example under the Government of India initiatives head. For any other social internship, such as one with an NGO, ask your AICTE activity points coordinator before you count on it.
What happens if I don’t complete the points by my final year?
Your 8th-semester grade card is issued only after you earn the required points, and your degree is awarded only after that grade card is released.
Is the VTU APTS App mandatory for all years?
VTU’s circular 2194 (3 August 2026) says the APTS app has been running across all its colleges since January 2026 to manage, monitor and verify activity points. Activities done before APTS are verified by your college coordinator. Check with your coordinator how your college uses it.
Where can I find a group of students to volunteer with?
Joining a community is the best way to stay updated. We have a dedicated WhatsApp Community for students where we share weekly volunteering opportunities in Bengaluru and online.
