Where to volunteer in Bangalore
As close to where you live as possible. Location, especially in a big dense city like Bengaluru, is the most important criterion for finding an opportunity that you can consistently participate in. You can begin on your street, with family and friends nearby. Else you can also find one by:
Areas
Popular residential areas like HSR, Malleswaram, Jayanagar etc. have historically been very active in civic participation. With the influx of the IT workforce, areas like Whitefield, Bellandur and Mahadevapura have also seen young professionals give more time to social impact work. Some organizations are:
- HSR Layout: SWMRT (Solid Waste Management Round Table)
- Indiranagar: St Broseph
Establishments
You can find volunteering opportunities in hospitals, temples (e.g. Kadu Malleshwara), orphanages etc.
Public spots
Lakes (like Srigandhakaval lake), parks, and tourist spots need constant maintenance. Civic agencies set up public participation programs to encourage local residents to take ownership of public spaces.
Civic facilities
Certain jails and libraries require the help of volunteers with various daily operational needs, outreach events and administrative work. Though staffed with paid employees, these facilities look towards volunteers to help raise awareness in different demographics of the community.
NGOs
Also called non-profits, they work towards a specific cause to help certain beneficiaries or the environment. Several trusts and foundations set up by Bengaluru natives, as well as branches of internationally recognized organizations, are active in the city. They recruit and onboard volunteers for various tasks throughout the year.

Who to volunteer with (hosts)
Coming together to care for each other is why many take up volunteering. Inclusion is an important aspect, where you keep perceived differences aside to work towards a common goal. Here’s who you can volunteer with:
Family and friends
Ring up your close ones and plan a simple outing. A clean-up, sapling planting or just raising awareness is a great activity to do with loved ones. Anirudh from Hennur has been feeding 90+ street dogs daily with his family, from their own funds and love. Join them!
Active citizens
Individuals like Plog Raj have been instrumental in taking the initiative and driving change with clean-ups. Join him and the Indian Ploggers Army on their next cleaning mission.
Resident groups
Area-specific resident welfare groups like the HSR Citizen Forum work on hyperlocal problems.
Student organizations
Present in colleges, they conduct certain activities for the general public as well. Institutions have active student clubs, Rotaract chapters and NSS groups that organize various activities.
NGOs (nonprofits, trusts, foundations)
Bengaluru has over 2,000 registered foundations, making it one of the most socially conscious and active cities in India. Working for one or more causes, these organizations welcome volunteers.

What causes to support
We grow as a society together, and no cause that uplifts life is small. From mental health to the environment to civic change, here are groups working to bring much-needed change and growth to individuals and communities.
- Women and child abuse support: Bembala Foundation
- Ecological conservation: Team Social Spotlight
- Education for neurodivergent children: Chiranthana Foundation
- Personal safety education: Enfold Proactive Health Trust
- Civic participation: India Cares Foundation
When to volunteer
Different schedules and priorities, of both the host (NGO, establishment) and the volunteer, create interesting opportunities as well as difficulties in effective matching.
Most people start with ‘episodic’, ‘one-time’ or ‘one-day’ volunteering. You can then grow into a more committed role with multiple visits over the week.
Weekend volunteering can also involve visiting establishments like schools to revamp their infrastructure, like RFC does.
Many establishments work corporate hours, so they expect volunteers to come on weekdays. However, some, like The Inclusion Movement, who help the differently abled, offer various opportunities over the weekend. Sometimes even helping out with a stall for a social enterprise can be a great change to your routine and a chance to meet a diverse crowd of visitors.
Online volunteering, post-Covid, has made volunteering flexible, so even late evenings can be a good time to contribute.
Activities to take part in
Clean-ups, sapling planting, making seed balls and painting school walls have become very popular with one-off volunteers looking for a mix of impact and fun in a short span.
Some other common tasks involve different aspects of running an organization, ranging from video editing, fundraising, blog writing, data entry and more.
Based on your availability and commitment, you can be involved in bigger projects. Here are some activities involving various general and specialized skills, along with the respective organization:
- Language translation: Step Up For India
- Garbage spot revamp: Youth For Seva
- Zero-waste temple: Ragigudda (Banashankari)
- Lake conservation: Thalaghattapura lake

Volunteering for college students
Volunteering for college students in Bangalore involves a few other considerations compared to other groups, hence a separate section for this group. Students from colleges affiliated to AICTE, various Rotaract clubs and college-based student clubs for social work all need to perform social work for community development. Read how AICTE activity points work.
Students also need to ensure the hosts provide them an e-certificate of participation, help track their hours, let them give feedback, inform them of the final impact on the beneficiary, and acknowledge and review them as well.
Challenges with volunteering in Bengaluru
Volunteering in Bangalore, just like in any other city in the world, while rewarding, can come with some challenges.
Structured process and system
Many individual or smaller hosts in Bangalore may not have coordinators or a formal system for recruiting, managing, or supporting volunteers. This can lead to confusion, underutilization of newcomers, and juggling multiple tools.
Communication
Language can be an issue. While English is widely spoken, some communities speak only Kannada or regional dialects, limiting the volunteer’s involvement. Multiple channels also add confusion. A thanking and rewarding system helps too.
Awareness or transparency
Many volunteers struggle to find credible opportunities or worry about how donations and volunteer efforts are being utilized. There is corruption even in NGOs, and many use fake or paid Google Maps reviews to portray a different picture.
Transportation and safety
Traveling to certain parts of Bangalore for volunteering, especially early in the morning or late at night, can be challenging due to traffic, distance, or safety concerns. Document and submit this to your group or establishment, and get compensated for travel when possible.
Impact measurement
Volunteers may feel demotivated if they’re unable to see the impact of their work, especially in short-term projects. So do keep open communication lines with your place of volunteering, so that they can share the impact you made even across longer time horizons.
How to find, join and manage
Deciding to gather is the first step; having a system in place is the second.
Finding
Talk to your social circles to find vetted opportunities. There are many, many opportunities around, for various causes, on different days. Most civic facilities around your home, place of learning or work also need help. If no luck, online searches and platforms can give you a broad range of options to choose from. Sceen is a platform to find curated ones, on a map and upcoming.
Joining
Based on the type of role, requirements and availability, the processes of hosts can vary, usually involving submitting an application or interest form, followed by some level of screening.
If you have faced unresponsive applications, or delayed responses beyond a 7–10 day period, drop them feedback and move on to find another place. If you have faced such a problem and can suggest how to fix it with our platform, mail or WhatsApp us.
Managing
Use information management platforms, preferably only one.
Keep information about all social impact Sceens, actions and communication in one place, from registration to execution and reviews.
Why Bengaluru needs more volunteers
With a population of nearly 1.4 crore, and growing fast.
Moderate weather, people from everywhere, greenery and income opportunities.
The city is a home for nurturing innovation and civic participation.
Citizens, groups, communities, foundations, facilities, services, organizations, corporations, government and civic agencies need to gather.
With a growing sentiment of divide, it’s important to be aware of differences, yet impact lives together.
Civic participation can only happen when residents are active, on the ground, working through the process, sharing success and celebrating collective change.
Volunteering is a fantastic doorway to improving integration, reducing isolation, testing the democratic process, upskilling the workforce and, above all, having unity through differences.
